Considering a University Transfer? Don’t Assume You Have to Start Again.

Already completed a year or more at university but thinking about changing your university or study destination? Before you withdraw, explore your options and find out whether your completed credits can be transferred.
You might be considering a change because you:
- Want to be closer to family
- Need a more affordable option
- Want a different university or study environment
- Have changed your academic or career plans
- Are considering studying in another country
Whatever your reason, start by checking whether your completed credits can be recognized at another university.
“If I leave my university, will I have to start my degree all over again?”
Not necessarily.
Depending on the university, programme and academic credits already completed, students may be able to transfer their credits and continue their degree at another institution without repeating the years they have already successfully completed.
What Is a University Credit Transfer?
A credit transfer allows a student who has already completed part of a degree to have their previous academic work considered by another university.
The receiving university generally reviews factors such as:
- Previous academic transcripts
- Subjects or modules completed
- Course content and learning outcomes
- Credits earned
- Academic performance
- The similarity between the previous and new programme
- The university’s individual transfer-credit policies
Based on this assessment, an eligible student may receive advanced entry into a later year of the programme, rather than starting again from Year 1.
However, credit-transfer decisions are made by the receiving university and can vary from one institution to another.
Recently, we supported three students in very different circumstances and each was able to continue their academic journey through a transfer pathway.
Three Students. Three Different Transfer Journeys.
Case Study 1: From the UK to the UAE

A student had completed her first year of university in London, studying an LLB-related programme with an international relations focus.
After completing her first year, she decided that she wanted to continue her education closer to home. Being away from family and finding it difficult to adjust to a new environment made her reconsider her plans for the remainder of her degree.
Rather than starting again, she explored whether her completed first-year studies could be recognised by a university in the UAE.
GroupL Education reviewed her academic background and helped her explore suitable transfer options.
She successfully received an offer for direct entry into the second year of a relevant LLB program in the UAE.
This meant she could continue progressing towards her degree without repeating the first year she had already completed.
Her journey:
UK – Year 1 → UAE – Direct Entry into Year 2
Case Study 2: From the USA to the UAE

Our second case involved an Indian student who had travelled to the United States to pursue her university education.
After completing a year of study, she decided that she wanted to explore an option that would allow her to be closer to her family in India.
Dubai offered an international study environment while also being considerably closer to home and well connected to India.
The student approached GroupL Education to explore whether she could transfer her completed studies to a university in the UAE.
We helped her identify a suitable pathway and supported her through the transfer and application process.
She successfully secured direct entry into the second year of her programme in Dubai.
Instead of beginning her undergraduate degree again, she was able to continue from the next stage of her academic journey.
Her journey:
USA – Year 1 → UAE – Direct Entry into Year 2
Case Study 3: From Georgia to the UK

The third case involved a student who had already completed two years of university studies in Georgia.
Due to complications with her existing academic pathway, she began exploring alternative options that would allow her to continue her education elsewhere.
Having already invested two years in her degree, starting again from the beginning was not the ideal outcome she was looking for.
GroupL Education reviewed her academic background and helped her explore suitable universities and transfer possibilities in the UK.
Following the university’s assessment of her previous studies, she received an opportunity for direct entry into the second year of her new programme.
This allowed her to continue her education through a new academic pathway rather than completely restarting her university journey.
Her journey:
Georgia – Previous University Studies → UK – Direct Entry into Year 2
